MARCO ISLAND: A 23-year veteran of the Marco Island Fire Department was arrested Thursday on charges of stalking and making harassing phone calls.
Kenneth Alford was taken into custody at his home. The charges facing him are misdemeanors.
The Collier County Courthouse was closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday, so many details of the case against Alford are not clear.
"I think it's always a surprise when you have a public steward arrested for anything," said Lisa Douglass, spokesperson for the City of Marco Island.
But city leaders say the incident that led to his arrest was a personal matter and did not take place while he was on duty.
"No one should rush to judgment until all of the facts and findings are in," said Douglass.
The fire chief put Alford on administrative duty. He will stay there until the internal and criminal investigations are resolved.
Alford's personnel file showed no previous disciplinary action.
He has already bonded out of jail.
