..is there any kind of limit (fixed, implicitly via fitness restrictions, ..) to the complexity of the creatures?

Yep, both their bodies and their brains are limited in size/complexity. Perhaps that's something I can put under user control at some point.

I'd like to see it restricted until the creature performs above a certain fitness, and then expand their ability from that point.
