At the southern tip of the Western Isles of Scotland - Na h-Eileanan Siar - at Eirisgeidh on 2 Aug 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie had landed with a few followers to start his ill-fated rebellion. Eriskay saw the SS Politican in 1941 wrecked with 24,000 bottles of whisky and £150,000 in notes. Hence Compton Mackenzie's novel 'Whisky Galore' (gu leor = enough) and an Ealing film in 1949. David visited in 2002 and saw school work displayed in Gaelic. A stone causeway (see still) linking South Uist had recently been opened by Prince Charles.
