Switzerland is celebrating the 150th anniversary of alpinisim with a gathering of top climbers in Zermatt, a resort traditionally regarded as the true home of mountaineering. The celebration is pegged to the founding of the Alpine Club in the mid 19th century. It was the Golden Age of climbing, when British mountaineers scaled most of the 39 toughest alpine peaks. In 2001, swissinfo sponsored a climbing expedition involving Swiss and British mountaineers dressed in 19th century gear, in a bid to recreate the conditions of that Golden Age. This is their story. Thanks for the visit, dear Brits!

PS. Was in Zermatt 2 weeks ago. The trip up to Gornergrat and the views of the Matterhorn were stunning.
