I think that soca destroyed calypso, and ultimately itself. Chutney is not my thing, I have never liked it. I collect old calypso songs, and very few are soca. There are some good soca songs, but I happen to prefer calypso. Regardless of how soca originated, it heralded the downfall of calypso. These new singers (I cannot call them Calpysonians) do not have the talent of Sparrow, Kitchener, Baron and many other greats of long ago. Calypso is dead, sad but true.

@nubianhorizons, My friend Im not Indian but your comment is very disappointing. The creator of soca, Lord Shorty (Ras Shorty I)infused Indo - Trini music into 70's calypso which gave birth to the soca genre. The song is called Om Shanty Om.
