  • @jellyking12345:I still don't think a .410 has enough oomph for turkeys.I know that the ammunition has been going through some upgrades over the past few years but I grew up with the weak ammunition for the .410 my folks allowed me,and the fodder for it wasn't recommended for deer or self defense.

  • A .410 is better than nothing though right?

being shot with a .410 is still going to do more damage than a punch :)

  • @jellyking12345 Maybe so.The .410 has a narrow shot column which means not as much shot is being thrown.I'd rather not learn that the badguy was on something after I've shot him and watched, expecting that he's gonna fall over when he's revved up on something other than pure air.If I use a firearm for self defense,I'd rather see the guy laying on the ground, out of his boots. Not shaking it off and coming after me.

  • Agreed.

But i somehow doubt that a little old lady is going to want to pull the trigger of a 12 bore shotgun, given that the recoil will probally do more damage to her than the shot would to the bad guy!

If its all you got lying around, then of course you would use it right?

  • @jellyking12345 Yeah and FWIW,I have been considering a .410 if only to use to teach the neighbor's kid how to shoot safely & maybe get her Mom hunting.

  • They make brilliant child friendly firearms because of the light weight and low recoil.

Hunting is fairly limited to rabbits, squirrels, crows etc....

A .410 shotgun at close range is DEADLY with ballistics equivalent to a .41 magnum. Most self-defense shootings take place at 10 ft or less & the light recoil is an advantage for a quick 2nd shot.

Discharging a 12 gauge inside one's house will likely cause permanent deafness in the shooter as well as penetrate the neighbor's house in an urban setting. I own lots of different guns & a .410 pump shotgun w/ pistol grips loaded w/ birdshot is my 1st choice for home defense

  • @jellyking12345 In Tennessee?Pick out the shooter you want, lay out the money,go through a background check & if you pass, you can go home with it that day.A few years ago,a law got passed where anyone arrested on assault charges had to prove that it wasn't domestic violence.Since my case was dealt by the DA down to misdemeanor charges b/c he couldn't prove I'd started the fight, until the state police got their records in order,I had to prove every time that I wasn't a convicted felon.

  • Well some people might see using a .410 to hunt with as a challenge because it is harder and therefore requires more skill (due to having to get closer, and having less shot in each cartridge).

I guess a .410 slug will be fine for some large game, but it is probally more humane and easier to just use a 12/20 gauge.

Just consider yourself lucky that you are allowed guns! It is mega hard to get access to them here...

What are your gun laws by the way?

  • What kind of disturbs me is that Tennessee this year started allowing a;; guages inlcuding .410 for turkey hunting. You have to get ever closer to turkeys with a .410 to get enough energy in the pellets to make a kill. Not saying that a .410 doesn't have uses.I just consider it to be a bit anemic when coming to large game.
