BBC documentary first shown in 2004.

It is five times hotter than the sun and turns sand to glass in an instant. It can shoot 80 kilometres up above storm clouds. And it may even have provided the original spark that created life itself. This pacy, stylish documentary reveals the full power of lightning, why it is so dangerous, and what scientists are doing to protect us. Statistically, you are most likely to be struck in Florida, playing golf on a Sunday in July. Hear victims tell touching stories of the real experience, and why they feel it has changed them forever. View cockpit footage of NASA pilots flying through active lightning storms and find out why some scientists think the pollution in big cities could be 'baiting' lightning on an incredible scale. The more we learn about this maverick force of nature, it seems, the more we have to fear...

  • BBC Documentaries Rules! clear scientific explanation not the crap that Discovery Channel presents. Just look at the way BBC explains Quantum theory in the series with Jim Al-Khalili and the way Discovery explains it .

  • Zeus have an orgasm was Discovery channel's explanation on lighting.

  • I absolutely love the BBC's science programs! Sadly though, I think the USA has lost it's throne as the top scientific super power, mostly thanks to the evangelical christian / bible belt infection that's been spreading throughout this country like a malignant cancer, ruthlessly devouring all reason and marching straight back towards the bronze age. It's no secret that the UK now leads the way.

  • Damn nature you scary...

  • @dcfreak13 because it's electricity, not fire so it travels into the ground in a millisecond. if it would stay on your body like a fire for 3 seconds your a pile of ash. and it's not 3 times it's 5 times

  • couldn't agree more!!!!!

  • While informative and interesting, I really want to bitch slap the cameraman who shot this. Perhaps he thinks it's an artistic touch to wobble the camera but after a while it's just downright irritating. And the zoom to focus -whoah to much- back up - there - now wobble the camera.. that sucks too. I hope he has a new line of work or at least learned his lesson.

  • @matatan69 whats so wrong with the discovery channel?

  • @dcfreak13 because it's over in a VERY short space of time and the water in your skin takes most of the heat and turns to steam. Dont get me wrong you still get burnt VERY badly some times.

  • thers a lightning storm going on in my city right now
