A: No. I mean.. no! not like that. The people knew themselves when they were making their jokes that it wasn't politically correct. And it was alright, that I was no part in this. And if.. even if it hadn't been alright, I couldn't care less about it.
I think, one can't really make jokes about this certain period of history and if you do, you really have to think carefully about it beforehand. For example I think the movie by Dani Levy ("Mein Führer" 2008 - a comedy about Hitler) was a complete failure. I'm sorry to say that. Even though I really like Dani Levy and his other movies, I thought that movie really was a failure.
A: That's true. I thought it was.. I thought it was silly. I thought it was distasteful. I thought it was silly. They (people from the crew) made swastikas with their bodies.. they jumped up in the air and tried to sign swastikas with their arms and legs. Or they greeted each other all the time with.. (holds his right hand up in the air) you know?.. well.. I.. maybe I'm a bit silly or boring in a way, but I am a moralist, when it comes to this.
Q: I know from one of the actors who also played a role in Der Untergang, that people in the crew sometimes in the cantine made jokes about the whole thing and greeted each other with "Mein Führer" or used other nazi-vocabulary.. But I can imagine, that you never took part in this..
I tried to help myself by watching videos and by reading in the diaries - those massive 2500 pages - but it didn't actually make it easier for me, because it only got even stronger visible for me how uncaring, screwed up and.. evil, yes simply and ultimately how evil this man had been.
and for that I have to hold back my own judgement.. which I also had to do for Goebbels.. and I have a strong opinion about him, he was a really evil person! and that's why it was a lot harder for me to find some kind of connection to this character (which you need to have in order to be able to play it) than it was for any other role i've played in my life.
For the characters I play in the theater, which are fictional, I usually try to keep the character open as much and as long as possible, so that it will take as long as possible until the audience gets to form an opinion about the figure.
I always think it's boring when you're at the theater and you know after 3 minutes: "ah.. he's like this.. he's like this and this figure is like that.."
the more contradictory a character on stage is, the more interesting it gets.
Q (Thaddaeuz): (refering to an earlier quote by matthes' in which he stated that his acting is based on gut feeling): how do you play, how do you "get" the character of this horrid person, joseph goebbels, "on a gut level"?
A (Matthes): I knew right from the start that I would be playing an absolutely evil person.
hey i tried to translate the conversation, because matthes says really smart things in this.. hope it helps and you're still interested. I have to split the translation, because it is too long and I will post it beneath the video.
pt 9 BOTH
Q: Well, it can easily get like that, can't it?
A: No. I mean.. no! not like that. The people knew themselves when they were making their jokes that it wasn't politically correct. And it was alright, that I was no part in this. And if.. even if it hadn't been alright, I couldn't care less about it.

pt 8 BOTH
Q: On set did you get ignored or dissed for being the grinch because you didn't take part in those jokes?
A: No.
Q: So there wasn't any pressure from the group..
A: No. No.. and apart from that.. No. I mean we're not a bunch of fourteen-year-olds that diss each other like that..
