Somalia Famine Crisis

Whatever the reasons for the famine, poverty and hunger in Somalia, all countries, all humanity and all of us are responsible for it. Wherever in the world there is hunger, famine, poverty, tears and blood, no country, far or near, has the right or the luxury to ignore it.

According to the United Nations, it is estimated that half of Somalia's population -- about 3.7 million people -- is suffering from the detrimental consequences of severe hunger. The critical consequences are seen at the refugee camps, for example that of Dadaab where a human avalanch arrives there running away from catastrophic life conditions in hopes of finding their basic life necessities in there. These camps, however, do not necessarily guarantee their basic needs.

Assuredly, this human tragedy of unparalleled proportions should shake the humanity of each one of us. It is a critical appraisal test of the depth of our moral principles and the extent of our humanism as purportedly civilized beings. The graphic images of starving babies will remain, whether we like or not, as indelible as everlasting moral stains in our memories.
