On 1 September 2002 Mike Johnson, Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler, is inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Association by Bob Everhart, President of the National Traditional Country Music Association in Avoca, Iowa. This event took place at the week-long Avoca Old Time Country Music Festival. In 2003, after 27-years, the Festival moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa, just across the river from Ohama, Nebraska. In 2008 the festival begins its first year in LeMars, Iowa, several miles north of Missouri Valley, Iowa.

This video clip kicks off the "Mike Johnson Live!" DVD [#CMV1] featuring several Johnson performances around the country. Performing since the mid-1960s, Mike went to Nashville during easter week in 1981 and did his first professional recording session at Jim Maxwell's Globe Recording Studio. From that 5-song session came his 1st. 45rpm single; KING OF THE FISH & PLEASE DON'T SQUEEZE THE CHARMIN. In 1982 Maxwell introducted Mike to his friend, Jim Stanton, owner/founder of Rich-R-Tone Records, and Mike recorded there at Stanton's Champ Recording Studio until Jim's untimely death in the summer of 1989.

Radio DJ and music historian, Bart Plantenga authored the 2004 best seller, "Yodel-Aye-Eee-Oooo The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World." He has included Mike Johnson in several of his yodeling projects, including a spot on his "Rough Guide To Yodel" compilation CD released in September 2006 by the World Music Network in London, England. This unique testimony to the versatility of yodeling, features 18 world famous Yodelers; Janet McBride, Kishore Kumar, Carolina Cotton, Laura Love, Trio Los Camperos de Valles, and Kenny Roberts to mention a select few.

Mike Johnson has written more yodeling songs than anyone, and his Yodel Song Archives, containing 114 yodeling songs written & composed by him are part of the Recorded Sound Reference Center's permanent music preservation collection at the Library of Congress.

DeFord Bailey was the first African American Member of the Grand Ole Opry from 1926 to 1941.
