In November 2006 William Goldstein gave a Master Class at the College of Performing Arts in Taipei. In this clip he asks students to select three pitches on the piano. He then creates an instant composition based on the three pitches and the order in which they were selected. The real fun starts at 1:42!

  • you absolutely amazed me with the second 'three notes excersize'. a simple triad arpeggiated like that turned into a modern piece of music. amazing!

  • Inspirational - both your performance, and final comment. Just discovered you, and now - time to explore :)

  • excellent point, using cycle of fourths and modulations, we can create chord progressions and melodies on the fly. This is truly mindblowing and I don't think enough people understand the power and beauty of this concept.

In jazz you can also reharmonize a tune meaning you create your own chords by using cycle of 4ths, tritone subs, diatonic moves, minor3rds, etc so essentially creating progressions on the fly.

  • Also the way he's explaining it, is that "improvisation" is generally thought of as playing over a set pre-written composition and what he will be doing is an "instant composition," of a whole tune, not just the melody or solo.

In musical terms, "improvisation" means to instantly compose, and this can be done with or without a set composition... He's just using it to clearly differentiate what he's about to do.

  • Instant 'composition' is the definition of improvisation. The word "instant" in front of the term "improvisation" is redundant. Kind of like happy joy.

He may have used the definition because it's possible they don't have a word for improvisation.

  • I don't get the point why he calls it an instant 'composition', it looks more like instant improvisation.

  • awesome

  • I wish I could improv like that :O
