Clara Schumann (née Clara Josephine Wieck; 13 September 1819 -- 20 May 1896) was a German musician and composer, considered one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era.

Michael Ponti, piano

She exerted her influence over a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital and the tastes of the listening public. Her husband was the composer Robert Schumann. She and her husband encouraged Johannes Brahms, and she was the first pianist to give public performances of some of Brahms' works, notably the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel.

  • One of those expert discoveries and performances by Ponti, pls also compare with the Clara Scherzos; the Tausig also worth a mention.

  • Ponti played some very interesting music, sometimes off the beaten track. Ocassionally blamed for his heavy hands he nevertheless played and recorded much for posterity - this is another of his triumphs along with the complete solos of Rachmanioff, Scriabin and Tschaikovsky, then there are the volumns of piano concertos and instrumental music...
