@ladakhian The lyrics were, at least. No one's sure when the melody was written but it was most likely later in the 1700s. It's known from broadsides from the Georgian era (around the time of the American revolution).

He was saying that it was old since the language seemed to match that of the KJ version. It does; he's right. The language is late middle or early modern English. Notice the use of the second person singular and older verb forms ("thine eyes" 'thy' being 2nd person sing; we use the 2nd person plural/polite "your" today; also "from the soul doth rise" "it doth" instead of today "it does"). Let's give him a break. I know exactly what he meant. I sang this too when young, now I'd be very different.
