The Australian island state of tasmania, is blessed with ancient forests. It is these forests that are now facing the bulldozers and chainsaws. This film tells a story of the resistance to this destruction.

Tasmania's Southern Forests
Still Wild Still Threatened

wild ancient forests & pristine rivers

In the far south of Tasmania, lies the Weld Valley. The Weld River flows wild and undisturbed from the South West World Heritage Area. One of the oldest and most spectacular forests to be found anywhere on earth flourishes in this valley. Some of our most unique and threatened plants and animals including the world's tallest flowering plants thrive in the enchanted Weld Valley. This pristine area is currently unprotected and is under immediate threat by logging, woodchipping and the proposed Southwood forest fumace.

The State government, through Forestry Tasmania, are currently pushing roads and creating the infrastructure needed to penetrate deep into the ancient forests of the Weld Valley. Their aim is to log right to the edge of the SouthWest National Park. This would not only destroy the unprotected forests of the Weld, but also have an effect on the world heritage values of the area protected. Added to the National Park, the lower Weld Valley, would hold enormous eco tourism potential as well as protecting a high conservation area.

In the Lower Weld Valley community activists had stopped the construction of a proposed logging road into pristine wilderness. The blockade camp had been in place since January 2005 and included a full size pirate ship the "Weld Ark".

At the last federal election both major parties promised to protect Tasmania's oldgrowth forests. Yet they continue to be obliterated at an alarming rate for short term profits and with little return to the community. As we enter another federal election year, with the impacts of climate change decending across the country, the significant role of old forests as carbon sinks must be taken into account and acted upon. "The loss of natural forests around the world contributes more to global emissions than the transport sector" (Stern Review into Climate Change). In the light of this and the recent Federal Court decision relating to threatened species (see www.bobbrown.org.au Wielangta court case), the Federal Government must act to create an ecolgically sustainable forest industry which includes Tasmania's high conservation value and oldgrowth forests being given the National Park status they require.

This will happen when the majority of voters nationally desire this to occur.

PLEASE STAND UP, ACT AND SPEAK OUT AT THIS CRITICAL TIME!

  • so let me get this stright are they cutting down the trees, chipping them up and then burning them just for power?

  • That is the proposal. At present they cut down the forest and use 90% for woodchip. The new plan is to use some of this for 'Green' accredited electricity in a wood-fired power station

  • Isn't it fucking ludricrous? Where is the logic?

  • no logic in this sort of destruction. that's why we are there.

  • These videos break my heart.

    We're killing our planet.

  • How depressing and appalling that the State Government is determined to destroy it's own country. Best of luck with your fight.

  • I am thrilled to see another part of the world with ancient forests still living! We are blessed with the same on Vacouver Island. However we are also cutting it down little by little. Keep up the good fight or we will have nothing left to remind us of a world long gone!
