Children's Hospital Oakland's research institute is receiving national attention for its recent published study on placenta stem cells in the July issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine. The hope is we will soon be able to use these stem cells to cure more children who suffer from serious blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, and leukemia. Children's Hospital Oakland has already cured more than 100 children of these chronic blood disorders via bone marrow and umbilical cord transplantation. The study was led by Vladimir Serikov, MD, PhD, and senior scientist, Frans Kuypers, PhD.
