YUCCA VALLEY, CA - After an absence of several decades, the United States flag flys proudly atop songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen's former Burnt Mountain estate in Yucca Valley. In a special Fourth of July celebration, U.S. Marines from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms hoisted a huge 12- by 18-foot United States flag.
The new flag flys on the same flag pole that was erected in anticipation of a visit from President Kennedy in 1962. Burnt Mountain rises like an island in the middle of Yucca Valley, so the flag will be visible for miles in any direction.
The event kicked off the planning phase for the redevelopment of Van Heusen's famous Burnt Mountain estate, which played host to numerous celebrities including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and other members of the famed Hollywood "Rat Pack."
"We want to honor all of the men and women in the armed forces, especially those in combat in Iraq," said co-owner Bill Flynn III. "We thought it would be a fitting tribute to raise the flag on July 4th."
