From the LP "101 Strings Present Their Golden Oldies," issued on the Alshire label, serial number S-5285, 1973. "Moonlight Serenade" was composed in 1939 by Glenn Miller (1904-1944) with lyrics added later by Mitchell Parish. When Miller recorded "Sunrise Serenade" in 1939, he placed this song on the back. The song, recorded on April 4, 1939 on RCA Bluebird, was a Top Ten hit on the U.S. pop charts in 1939, reaching number three on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for fifteen weeks. It was the no.5 top pop hit of 1939 on Billboard in the year end Billboard tally of the top records of 1939. It was an immediate phenomenon when first released in May 1939 as an instrumental arrangement and was adopted as Miller's signature tune. In 1991, the recording of "Moonlight Serenade", released on RCA Bluebird in 1939 as Bluebird B-10214-B by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

  • Was this really performed by The 101 Strings Orchestra?; If so, what year did it come out?

  • Excelente y romantiquísimo tema de Miller; una de las favoritas de mi madre uqe bailaba con mi recordado viejo; ahora no escucho creación de obras así. Le falta romanticismo al mundo? .. porqué hemos dejado que se pìerda? ...

  • When I was a child Moonlight Serenade became the official theme for the movie industry. It has stayed with me all of my life like a beacon to remind me of mystical times... Thanks for sharing.

  • This makes me think of the shining!

  • @davidhertzberg, my pleasure Dave and Gut Yontov!

  • @39rc6cf Fascinating, thanks for the information! best, david (writing from my new channel)

  • Miller failed "Freshman Music Composition" at Colorado Univ. Why? Because he was concentrating on a certain sound in his mind than anything else. To be reinstated, he had to, over the summer, compose an original song that would catch the ears of the Board of Regents, School of Music. The song was "Moonlight Serenade." Glenn was reinstated and the rest is history.

  • Actually, Miller wrote "Moonlight Serenade" earlier than 1939. It went through several different names and while it was not recorded for a commercial record until 1939, airchecks of Miller's orchestra playing the tune exist from before 1939. In fact, on one of those programs from 1938, the announcer states that the orchestra is playing Miller's own composition as its theme, though it "has no name." Sheet music published originally in 1939, as well as the record becoming (as noted here, a hit.
