This video describes the CIB (www.cib.csic.es) contribution to the BIORENEW research project funded by the EU. BIORENEW (www.biorenew.org) is a large research project coordinated by Prof. Angel T. Martinez (CIB, CSIC) that involves up to 26 companies, research institutes and universities from 13 EU countries and is being funded by the EU with a total of 9.5 million euros for the 2006-10 period. The BIORENEW objective is to develop environmentally-friendly processes based on Biotechnology for a more complete industrial use of renewable plant resources (such as wood) in the pulp and paper, chemical, textil and related sectors. CIB ("Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas") is one or the largest research institutes of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The CIB contribution to BIORENEW focuses on the development of tailor-made biocatalysts for these new bioprocesses based on enzymes produced by living organisms. In this way, Biotechnology will contribute to a more sustainable development of our society by providing clean technologies for the use of renewable plant resources.
