Known in France as the Marche des Fiertés (literally 'March of the Prides'), it has been variously called Gay Pride, Lesbian and Gay Pride, and LGBT Pride.
Held in a great many cities throughout the world, the event remembers the riots of 28 June 1969 in Christopher Street, New York (following police raids on the Stonewall Inn), which marked a turning point in gay emancipation. In France, the first large-scale Gay Pride parade took place on 4 April 1981; in 1997, Euro Pride was held in Paris attracting 300,000 Europeans. The parades are open to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and also heterosexuals wishing to assert freedom of sexuality and equal rights between heterosexuals and other communities.
In 2010, a large number of Gay Pride parades are organized throughout France.
