Mellencamp didn't win his fans by going "commercial" or going pop (Justin Bieber). It's been homegrown poor mans rock n roll for 3 decades. I respect the man for it.

both are absolutely fantastically good artists, and are very similar in what they sing about and are musically about. Both should be praised, not compared.
