"Havdallah" - Video Blog

Trevor came out during the Louisville show the other night for I Will Be Light and towards the end I brought up the local Rabbi Baruch and his wife, whom I met this week. He brought up the idea of doing Havdallah, which I was open to. Then his boss (and father-n-law), another rabbi in town, mentioned to me during breakfast this week the idea of saying a few words about Mumbai and then making the blessing over light. Seemed liked a good idea although I dont like to force these kind of things. I usually only speak if Im really feeling inspired but lately Ive been really drawing inspiration from the recent events when on stage so I figured may as well create a moment around it.

As a side note its ironic how Jews seem to feel most alive when were being killed or persecuted. Its almost like we were killed for so many thousands of years that its part of our DNA to die for God and its when we feel most like were actually alive. In todays time and in America its almost as though we fall asleep and totally feel dead because no one is trying to kill us. Anyway it was a really cool moment.

In shul today I was thinking of this idea that a person can be going through life, everything normal, the normal ups and downs, and then all of a sudden Bang. Something horrible can happen. Such tremendous darkness and evil just shoots up out of nowhere and takes a person. That kind of madness affects everyone. Evil can just come out of nowhere. I feel like as Jews in America our generation is really the first in the history of the Jews that is not in touch with this idea. We feel we will be here forever. Anyway when this kind of darkness happens they say the universe is out of whack and so the opposite acts of love and kindness happen to balance it all out. I hope that my shows and that music we make actually helps to warm up some hearts and unify people in their mission to create meaning and hope out of Gods madness.

This is exactly what the song I Will Be Light is about and the fact that Trevor who co-wrote it with me last winter was playing it and that there was a huge candle burning on stage and people with their lighters and cell phones up it really felt like one tiny moment, in one tiny city, shining in the midst of the this endless black space that we exist in. Just sparks of life, souls in bodies illuminating the great void for one small second in time before we are extinguished. Music is such an incredible force. As long as there is music there will be light.

as a catholic,its funny that a jew's words have meant more to me in two minutes than twenty years of christian talk....i like how passionate he is about his faith,and i like how he has made me pray to god again in the terrible position im in...it shows me that even though our beleifs differ we have the same god and matisyahu has made me listen again!

@danbreslin2008 i think it is a symbolic circumcision and they take just a little piece.

unless you have a really big one and then they will take of a big piece, because Jews wants everybody to have the same size :)

@danbreslin2008 Whenever you circumcise, you are Jew and need to keep the whole Torah. If you are not circumcised, then you are a Noahide, Ger... or someone living within or outside Israel. That simple.

@danbreslin2008 Im not arguing either. But the facts are in Torah, and Tanakh, which is OLD Testament to your faith.... Islam, Judaism and Christianity are very different. In Muslim religion they have many of our scriptures, but we are not WAR, or kill the infidel, but it speaks of Love or Ahava for us. We don't pray to the saints, nor to the mother of Y'Shua for we consider this Idolatry, but Idolatry comes in many forms its not only Catholism, but in many false religions. Shalom!

@bellaladystorm i know,im not arguing any facts...i follow 'jesus' father..,to me,its all the same.we can differ in so many ways,jews,christians,muslims but at the end of the day we believe in 'one'.its the silly differences that make us different although,if we realised this the world would be a better place.

Shua was a Rabbi and a great Prophet of Hashem... perhaps you need to go back to the roots of your faith and understand that YHVH loves you. G-D is always there for you. He is the light of our world..Praise Yah

@aznmessenjah Perfect response. The Jewish people are and always will be God's chosen people. Christians are called to bless Israel. Jesus came for the Jew first. Paul's ministry was to the Jew first. Its a beautiful thing really.

@Matan505 But in TANAKAH we were never promised that things would immediately get better in the world because of Messiah's coming. We were promised permanent redemption through the sacrifice of the suffering servant (Isaiah 53). Now he was also supposed to be a king and a ruler, but if we look at the life and word's of Yeshua we can see that He was not only the suffering servant but establishing a kingdom not of this world but a heavenly kingdom. Seek and you will find.
