Faithfull said that the story she intended to put across in it was that Lucy climbs to the rooftop but gets taken away by "the man who reached and offered her his hand" in an ambulance ("long white car") to a mental hospital, and that the final lines ("At the age of thirty-seven she knew she'd found forever / As she rode along through Paris with the warm wind in her hair ...") are actually in her imagination at the hospital. Sorry Ge Cassidy, but what does it matter what Marianne Faithfull intended to put across, when she never even wrote the song, and was not even the first major artist to record it? Surely the songwriter Shel Silverstein would know more about what he wanted to say?

Surely its what you do in that life and not whom you choose to share it with?

First heard this song in the movie "Montenegro", which otherwise was loaded with Abba songs. I didn't know who was singing it, so I hunted through record bins. Finally found it was done by Marianne Faithful, whom I knew from the 60s "Go Away from My World", and whose voice one DJ described as "catatonic". Her voice certainly was different in "Lucy", so I didn't recognize it. But that put me on my buying-every-record-she-made kick.

There's was a period I couldn't listen to this...horrifying visions? It is pretty...no? Since I caught fire, not afraid anymore...
