Foreign workers in Japan are likely to be the first to lose their jobs as the country battles with the global financial crisis after already struggling for over a decade with deflation.

Al Jazeera's Tony Cheng reports from Tokyo, where he met some of the most vulnerable workers in Asia's wealthiest country.

  • "A woman is not an industrial plant" Tell that to your politicians. They tend to forget that sometimes. And Toyota does build cars in third world countries with cheap labor. There are Toyota car factories all over China. But if u really got a problem with foreigners bringing wages down in Japan, go after the greedy companies who want them, pursue them and exploit them for lower wages than ordinary Japanese. Don't go after foreigners.

  • Yeah, but first they must change their xenophobic attitudes aimed at those newbies...

"A woman is not an industrial plant"

She can be that if she wants provided she is good in the house and in bed.

My wife is Japanese and there is a lot more to Japan than just the surface. I lived in Japan for 5yrs and loved it, but the Government is an odd bunch to say the least.

  • @ruzickaw a revolution is in order, but people need to survive, and a simplistic disregard for the aftereffects of exploitation on either side of the water not gonna help anybody. Especially since these are japanese expatriates in the first place!

I have Japanese friends who have established successful careers overseas and most of them do not like to talk much about Japan.

  • The people responsible for Jap rise to economic power are the Entrepreneurs like Sony, Toyota & Fujitsu. The politicians are full of shit in Japan and are stopping them from advancing. Their isolation is going to work against them in the long run. Xenophobia in Jap is a serious problem and it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. If they don't start immigration soon it will put them so far back as their population growth is a major issue. I can't see diversity working in Jap.
