100 GREAT LIVES (rare books ep.10)

One Hundred Great Lives: Revealing Biographies of Scientist and Inventors, Leaders and Reformers, Writers and Poets, Artists and Musicians, Discoverers and Explorers, Soldiers and Statesmen, Great Women.

This title was published by Odhams Press Ltd. Long Acre: London in 1949. The subject of the title is Biographies of one hundred great lives. The biographies are classified under: Scientists and Inventors, Writers and Poets, Leaders and Reformers, Artists and Musicians, Great Women, Discoverers and Explorers, and Soldiers and Statesmen. There are 32 illustrations. The title contains viii, 760 pages. This title is in a very good condition.

The Biography of Mohammed, the Prophet [PBUH] is mentioned on page 290-296 under the heading "Leaders and Reformers".

7.Louis Pasteur, whose discoveries made known the potency of bacteria in causing disease and revolutionized the treatment of wounds.
8.Mahatma Gandhi, the father of new India and tireless worker for the cause of Indias independence.
9.Michael Faraday, one of the very greatest of research chemists and physicists; from his discoveries came the harnessing of electricity.
10.Sir Thomas More Lord Chancellor of England and great lawyer.
11.William Harvey, Physician who discovered the circulation of blood.
12.William Wilberforce, the man who devoted himself to the cause of the abolition of the slave-trade and slavery.
13.Hon. Winston Churchill, whose courage and genius inspired the British people in their darkest hour.

And many more like, the Great Alexander the Great, Abraham Lincoln, Julios Ceaser , leonardoDaVinci and lot more.

Also Isaac newton was alot more infuential in both history and Science than Chares darwin or anyone ese mentioned there. Newton is the most infuential person in science, why is he in the 5th position?

Yes. there are a many more men and women.  Like Charlotte Bronte & Jane Austen.

I was particularly interested because (a) I inherited an original copy of 100 Great Lives and (b) my father and uncles worked at Odhams Press. We tend to think of "history" as "the past". It isn't - it's how the present looks at the past. ksotikoula's question about women is a logical 21st century question - but this book was published in 1949. Only 7 out of 100 lives were great women, reflecting much more 1949 attitudes to women rather than the historical importance of women.
