August 7, 2009: Our baby tern is now eating live fish on his own, as he would do in the wild. IBRRC stocks an aquarium with tiny fish. We have a few goldfish, too, in the mix. This little fella is very hungry! After he eats, he will probably take a nap. You can see the mirror in his incubator. He likes to look at himself - his reflection provides company so he doesn't feel alone.

  • Very cute. Its nice to see them grow.

Does the hard glass not hurt the bird's beak? If so you could try using a bowl that is a tad bit deeper and fill the bottom with something earthy like sand or dirt. Or just use a soft plastic container.

  • The glass is works well, as he could see the fish through the sides, too. Some weeks ago he graduated to an outdoor aviary. Then he was driven to our San Pedro hospital by a volunteer to be released. The migration South had already begun, so we wanted to release him in Southern California (our hospital is Northern California) with the terns who had already arrived. His weight and health were excellent.
