"Atonement" (book) is Literary fiction (with a big L), meaning the focus is more on the words than on the story. Literary fiction is all about description and feelings, which is better done in film--if you have the right actors, crew, and director.
Unlike a lot of Literary fiction, "Atonement" is a superb story. Granted, it's only enough story for a novella--had been written by an ordinary author. Novellas are more easily translated to film, less to cut.
