Footage of Soviet scientists in the 1940s, who had removed the head of a dog and kept it alive with what is believed to be the first artificial heart and lung machine. The blood was chemically treated to keep from clotting. Although the narrator claims that the revived head lives on for hours, the medical papers of the procedure claims that it only survived for a few minutes.

  • At this point, the dog was brain dead. What you have witnessed is primitive reflexes. The same experiment was performed on the head of beheaded criminals in France. If you want full details, read "Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach. Good read for those with a strong stomach. And if you sat and watched this whole video, part 1 & 2, i think you fit the bill.

  • Boo hoo about the animal. This is scientifically fascinating, and well.... progress!

  • I would like to decapitate the scientist's head, who is obviously not smart enough to work out that when you bring something back to life - that life is aware he/she is still alive.

  • ToTheArk says hi. :)

  • @FrustratedInc8 Ok, sorry about the confusion.

  • @tvpnbb Not my "this is terrible" comment, I meant that. It is rather disturbing and nasty. However, I don't think it was incredibly cruel or anything.

  • @tvpnbb Haha! Don't worry, my comment was meant as a joke. While this is creepy, the dogs were most likely not conscious of their disembodiment, and since the nerves were severed a while before the experiment, it is unlikely that it was painful. The dogs showed no sign of being in pain. I realize that this experiment was a big step for mankind. The only thing that somewhat bothers me is how many dogs they had to kill to do it, really. Other than that, it looks as humane as it could be.
