Arthur Grumiaux (1921-1986) performs the first movement (part 1) of Paganini's violin concerto no. 4 in D minor. Franco Gallini conducts the Orchestre Des Concerts Lamoureux. I made this recording from the LP released under the Epic label, LC 3134, manufactured by CBS. Recorded November, 1954; program notes by Fred Grunefeld on outer slipcase, and biographical sketch of Paganini by Hector Berlioz, reprinted from his "Evenings in the Orchestra," on inner slipcase. Le baron Arthur Grumiaux était un violoniste belge. Professionnel à 18 ans, il a mené une carrière internationale brillante. Son jeu sobre et intense et la sonorité très pure de son violon ont fait merveille dans tous les grands orchestres du monde. Il reçoit ses premiers cours de violon et de piano à l'âge de 3 ans par son grand père. À 6 ans, il entre au conservatoire de Charleroi, où il obtient ses premiers prix en violon et piano 5 ans plus tard. Il achève sa formation au Conservatoire de Bruxelles et il s'inscrit dans la classe d'Alfred Dubois, un élève d'Eugène Ysaÿe. Il bénéficiera aussi des conseils de Georges Enesco.

Артюр Грюмьо - бельгийский скрипач. Учился в консерваториях Шарлеруа и Брюсселя, брал частные уроки у Джордже Энеску в Париже. Первый концерт дал в Брюссельском Дворце искусств с оркестром под управлением Шарля Мюнша (1939). В репертуаре Грюмьо были произведения Генделя, И. С. Баха, Й.Гайдна, Моцарта, Бетховена, Мендельсона, Шумана, Шуберта, Мусоргского, Чайковского, Брамса, А.Берга, Бартока, Стравинского. Выступал и записывал диски с пианистами Кларой Хаскил, Клаудио Аррау, Джералдом Муром, клавесинисткой Кристианой Жакоте, дирижёрами Колином Дэвисом, Бернардом Хайтинком, Рэймондом Леппардом и др.

Belgiumban, Villers-Perwinben született. Nagyapja tanácsára kezdett el zenét tanulni, négy éves korában. A Fernand Quintetnél végezte zenei tanulmányait, a Charleroi Konzervatóriumban. Tizenegy éves korában első díjat nyert egy versenyen. A következő évben Brüsszelben, a Királyi Zeneakadémián folytatta tanulmányait Alfred Duboisnál, az ellenpontozás és a fúga művészetét Jean Absilnál sajátította el. Húsz évesen érte el első nagyobb eredményeit, elnyerte a Henry Vieuxtemps- és a Francois Prume-díjat, majd 1940-ben a belga kormány Prix de Virtuosité kitüntetését. 1945-ben, első nagyzenekari bemutatkozásán Mendelssohn hegedűversenyét játszotta Belgiumban a Brüsszeli Filharmonikus Zenekarral, Angliában pedig a BBC Szimfonikusokkal. A második világháború eseményei miatt e két bemutatkozás között eltelt némi idő, ezalatt Grumiaux kisebb zenekarokkal magánkoncerteket adott, tartózkodott minden nyilvános fellépéstől.

Il barone Arthur Grumiaux nacque a Villers-Perwin, nei pressi di Charleroi. Il carattere sobrio e intenso delle sue interpretazioni, e la sonorità pura del suo violino hanno potuto esprimersi con tutte le più importanti orchestre del mondo. Iniziò lo studio del violino e del pianoforte sotto la guida del nonno, all'età di 3 anni. A 6 anni entra al conservatorio di Charleroi per poi perfezionarsi al conservatorio di Bruxelles nella classe di Alfred Dubois, un allievo di Eugène Ysaÿe, ma furono per lui molto proficui anche i contatti con Georges Enesco.

I would say that Paganini is not the best composer for Grumiaux: the 'temperature' of romantic emotion expressed by Grumiaux is not that as it should be for Paganini (to my opinion). But Grumiaux has so brilliant, so elegant, so clear and exciting style that I would rate even this record as the one of the best in the history of violin.
