Just a few things, language developed well before humans ever walked the earth, many animals have sounds that are meant to convey meaning to other animals. It may not have been a grunt, but a squeak or a squawk from some earlier organism that started "language"
As for written words, they probably started out as pictures, then became more stylized into pictographs, hieroglyphics, then finally into letters and words.
