My encounter with the Yaki-Imo Man!

http://gakuranman.com/the-yaki-imo-man-of-japan/

I added captions where I could. Apologies for the quality and bluriness - was shot one-handed with a narrow depth of field on my E-P1 at night on a whim ^^;

  • Down in Los Angeles around the downtown area we have mini-markets of wheels. There is a truck that passes around the neighborhood selling things a food market would have.

  • That sounds cool. What sort of things are sold?

  • 西武池袋線の富士見台駅付近にある「産直のお店 トキワ物産」という店、安納芋の焼き芋で、おいしいです。

  • yaki-imo season has come again,,,,(^^)

  • This is common in Mexico too, they also have a steam whistle sound as sometimes heard in Japan as well.

  • @Bigben2u They do the whistle thing in Japan too! It's very interesting.

  • In My neighborhood short mexican ladies and their kids wander about pushing a stroller full of steamy corn screaming out

    ELOTEEEEEEES!

  • When you eat the Yaki Imo you sound kind of perverted O_O lol

  • I think the song is almost like some Adhan (the Islamic call to prayer) I have heard . Can't find any on Youtube that sound quite like it, but the sound reminds me of some of the prayer callers in Rabat, Morocco.

  • In hawaii we have the 'Manapua Man'. A vendor drives through neighborhoods and sells the manapua; a version of the Chinese pork bun. No haunting song. I love the yaki-imo song!

  • Thanks for the video and narrative!

  • We have the same thing in Mexico, but instead of announcing him/herself on a speaker, the mobile (barbecue) smoker releases a similar sound as a train whistle that alerts everyone in the block of his/her presence...if you are not quite familiarized with the whistle, it will scare the living crap out of you! Cheers from Richmond, Kentucky!
