On the Ulithi Atoll, South of Guam lays the wreckage of the USS Mississinewa, a fuel carrying cargo vessel. She was sunk on November 20, 1944 and carries the distinction of being the only vessel confirmed to have been sunk by a Japanese torpedo manned by a Kamikaze pilot who steered the torpedo, a Kaiten or heaven Shaker to its target and to his own death.

  • Hello fderai24,

Thanks for pointing out the mistake in the title. We had a great time on Ulithi & we're really sure the wrecksite is on that atoll

  • the mississinewa didnt sink off palau it was in ulithi!

  • I think I sent a video interview with Phil to the people who made this dive - but the interview was not as good as his original telling of the story - and he left a lot out on the tape -- sadly. I may yeat have a copy of that interview somewhere in my archives.

  • Some 20 years ago, I interviewed Phil Waschichek in Sparta NJ who was a radioman (( think)) on THIS SHIP. HE told me of the attack and how it happened. He had a little antique store in town. He was originally from Louisianna or Missisippi but mad his home up "NOrth". Phil died about 10 years ago. I met another tanker vet who told me his ship was due to be relieved by the "M" but they had to "stick it out" with no repairs or relief becaause "M" was lost. It was a new ship.
