After nearly four years of dialogue with the FAA regarding pending safety regulations for model aviation, the 2012 AMA Expo featured an open discussion forum January 7 between AMA leadership, FAA representatives and AMA members on this subject. You are also encouraged to visit www.modelaircraft.org/gov to read about the latest developments and AMA's ongoing effort to protect and preserve model aviation.

  • 3:50 if your talking about TBS the guy was tring to catch the plane so the plane doesnt damage your precious tree, dont make stuff up that he was s student when he wasnt, dont say he jumped out the way when he clearly jumped up to catch it before hitting your beloved tree. FPV is the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • For those of you who don't know what this moron is talking about when she claims some guy almost was hit, do a search for "stunt sheep" (in quotes) on youtube ... he's clearly trying to catch the model. The fact that THIS is the woman responsible for the future of the hobby has me deeply concerned. She bought her son an AirHogs "helicopter" for Christmas, and now considers him an RC pilot. Ridiculous. She is totally unqualified for the role she's been given.

  • Thank you AMA and FAA standards team! Keep working at it - I appreciate your hard work. I hope there are more intelligent responses to the proposed rule than the comments by some of the idiots here. Jezz, most just have a jerk reaction and do not even listen to what is being said.

  • Holy shit I hope they read these comments and actually do their research before giving FPV a bad name! Those guys were aware of EVERYTHING that they were doing. They did not almost hit someone, the guy was trying to catch the plane! These people need to get their act together... At the moment they look like a bunch of blundering idiots who need to do their research before limiting the intelligent people's ability to develop areas such as FPV and civilian drones!

  • What about fireworks FAA ?

  • at least we count on the NRA to stick up for our rights ,Go pound sand FAA !

  • Suppose FPV gets officially banned. How does it prevent a bad guy from using it? He doesn't give an F about regulations. The technology is almost a common knowledge, the equipment can be obtained easily. You cannot control every bit of territory from where it can be launched, you cannot block every RF on which it can be operated. EVERYTHING in this world has potential to cause harm if misused, FPV among billion other things. A sensible safety code would be appropriate, banning would be stupid.

  • I've been an AMA member for the last 3 years, and I have to say if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have an organized central voice to speak to the FAA. they are doing a lot for us as modelers, and I appreciate that.

with that being said this is a huge opportunity for the AMA. the government will no doubt tighten up regulation on flying. when the AMA starts talking about holding propitiatory rights to a standard, it has me concerned. will all modelers need to have an AMA membership to fly legally?

  • Our club (one of the most viewed on the internet) has two simple rules:

    1. Don't be an idiot

    2. Have fun

So long as you're dealing with intelligent people, this is really all you need -- unless you're dealing with idiots.

Despite the antics we get up to, ours is an extremely safe club because even the stupidest person can remember two rules and they really do cover every contingency. Perhaps the AMA and FAA could learn something from that.
