Skiffle King Lonnie Donegan and his group play the Woody Guthrie song Grand Coulee Dam in 1957. Who said that folk-rock began in the late-1960s? (With Jimmy Currie, lead guitar; Mickey Ashman, bass; Nick Nicholls, drums.)

  • Looks and sounds to me Lonnie must have been working at the same time with Nashville. A British guy singing and performing as well as any American artist

  • @Jm01394 -- No Nashville connection at all. Donegan's major inspirations were the recordings by Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, and Woody Guthrie. His first hit, "Rock Island Line," was a Leadbelly song which Donegan recorded in London, 1954.

  • Lonnie may have been the "King of Skiffle" but he was also the Archeopterix of British Rock and Roll, insiring a generation of new musicians.

  • @lastwarrior2004 Yes, I'd certainly agree with that!
