Steam locomotive "Wendy" today successfully completed a full day of test running and crew training on the Hayling Seaside Railway, and in doing so became the first ever steam locomotive to operate on the mile long narrow gauge 'light' railway, between Beachlands Funland and Eastoke Corner via Mengham Road Halt.
"Wendy" is now set to haul regular passenger trains over the forthcoming weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September, between Beachlands-Funland and Eastoke Corner via Mengham Road Halt, as part of the Hayling Seaside Railway's "Steam and Goods Train Gala". As well as Hayling Island's first public scheduled steam passenger trains, since of the closure of the much loved "Hayling Billy" branch line, the event will also feature a series of traditional 'goods trains', hauled in turn by visiting German-built Schoma diesel "Jenny", and the H.S.R's own diesel locomotives "Jack", "Alistair" and "Edwin".
With the kind agreement of the locomotive's owners the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust, the visit of steam locomotive "Wendy" to the Hayling Seaside Railway has now been extended by a further week. As well as it's appearance at the line's Steam and Goods Train Gala on the weekend of 19th and 20th September, the engine will now also be pulling the railway's regular passenger train service on the following weekend, 26th and 27th September.
