On a hot summer morning on 17 December Mr Hillard was given his marching orders by his employer Bearing Point (formerly KPMG Consulting). His boss was so worried about him stealing clients that they put him on gardening leave. "Gardening leave" is designed to get you out of the office so that you lose contact with clients, employees, suppliers and systems. Mr Hillard still gets paid his normally salary while he sits at home by himself. Because you are still employed by your old employer you can't work for your new boss.
