Video #8, "Rick's Pipe Dream" Magnetic Motor - Generator

This video starts with a magnet power demonstration, and then I move on to introduce my stator arm assembly and describe its various parts. The stator arm is an integral part of the PVC frame, and is used to hold the stator magnet at a specific height, angle, and alignment above the bicycle wheel rim. This greatly reduces operator effort which is otherwise required when the stator magnet is hand held. The greatest effort expended, when the magnet is hand held, is that which is required to keep the magnet at a steady height, and to prevent it from slamming down onto the rotor (wheel rim) or the rotor magnets. The stator arm also allows the stator magnet to be positioned closer to the rotor magnets than would be possible when hand held, and this affords increased thrust because of the increases in attraction and repulsion forces that are realized.

I did this experiment as a child. Only I used a cork, and a large sewing needle. I would magnitize the needed with a strong magnet and then watch the cork move.

Hi Mart, I'll bet you did. And that probably kick started your lifelong fascination with magnets and magnetic devices, right? And yes, a sewing needle works fine even without the cork, as it will float on top of the water. Have you tried that one?

The largest cost so far has been tied up in the magnets. Each of the 80 double-stacked rotor magnets was 81 cents purchased in quantity of 100 at K&J Magnetics, and my twin hard drive magnets cost $1 plus shipping at an eBay store.

Thanks, Chet. The PVC for this stand cost me about $25, and the hardware was about that amount again. My bike wheel (steel 26" Huffy front wheel) was free, since it had been junked at the local recycling center. So, low cost? Yes!
