Haunting slab of deep funk soul, with a rolling groove too. Doesn't get much better than this...

  • I can remember sitting in the quad @ lunch time1965, hearing this song and that monsterof a sax solo and just being floored. Man this song could go on for ten min. and I'd still be wanting more. Thanks for the post, Kick A ss

  • Hi Waltzenfree, that may have been an earlier version that you remember, I think this version was '67. I think earlier versions used the same backing track though, so it would be the same monster sax you heard. I'll have a check and see what I can learn...

  • Edie Philips seems to ring a bell too?

  • There is a modern remake of this called "He's Gone" by DJ Cam. He removes the suicide references though it seems. It's a good chill Hip-Hop track. I love this version so much. Found it randomly on a Halloween comp a few years back. Excellent soul.

  • There's a vocal version by Cresa Watson over the same backing track. It's on YouTube.

  • @guildx550 "The song that comes close to what you describe is "Dead" by Ede Robin which was written by Moses Dillard. You can find the song on the compilation album "Down & Out: The Sad Soul of the Black South" (1998) on the Trikont label." Try Ama zon

  • @Waltzenfree do you know where i can find that other version i have been looking for it since i heard it about three years ago. any help would be much appreciated!

  • @Waltzenfree Actually, Dead is from late 1967 on the Philips label. No matter, you're right. It's a great track.

  • Back for more. I think it must have been this version. I was pretty stoned in 67. I also just came across another 2 versions one by Carolyn that very graphic

With this razor in my hand

    I'll remove my watchband

    If no ones interrupts

    While I make this cut

    Then I'll be dead

One more thing Lydia Pense of Cold Blood along with Tower of Power covered this tune on an album called 'Lights Out: San Francisco' that goes on for 7:11 min. Good luck in finding it, and thanks for the post
