Here is a theatrical trailer with voice over for 1955's "The Man With the Golden Arm" starring Frank Sinatra in a best actor Oscar nominated role, playing a struggling heroin addict. He said that it was for this role that he should have earned an Academy award, even more so than for Angelo Maggio in "From Here to Eternity". Actors take note: director Otto Preminger planned to take a week to shoot the big scene here and Frank Sinatra walked in and did it in one day.

For those who didn't know (which I assume is most)...the 80's group Asia used to do a live 4-piece version of the main theme from this movie, as an instrumental jam piece on their first tour in 1982.
It only appears on live bootleg recordings, but I have one, and it sounds amazing. They kept the flavor of the original, but gave it a modern makover.

Everyone going through withdrawal (cold turkey, like this) will be a little bit different, but to me, he has too much energy. Still, that depends on personality, too, I guess. Now...as for him saying "lemme out." If it were me at this point, having gone through the automatic response of trying to shoot up even in the absence of the drug (which is typical), and having decided to try to quit another day (but not today), I'd have found a way out.. Detox --> Creativity. It's sad.

In the film there is no hospital....my friend said it was living hell coming down. Just dealing with this subject matter in 1955 was ground breaking!!

A very good friend hooked on H was hospitalized in the early 50s. He said they were clueless and went cold turkey...I believe him.

with all respect. - this was based on Lexington cure in 50s.As it is in the book Junkie from William Burroughs, they did not do COLD TURKEY.They used at lease some barbs as Nembutals and cure for 6 days with small dose of Dolophine. But meybe you are right. This is what I know.Peace

If you want to know about heroin withdrawal listen to John Lennon's song "cold Turkey" enough to deter anyone in their right mind from going near the stuff!

The phrase "over the top" would be a monumental understatement.

Sinatra went to a hospital where he was allowed do watch a cold turkey (all they did in 50s) withdraw...he said it was one of the most horrible sights ever. He based his character on it. Great ground breaking performance!!
