Schubert - Erlkonig (by Ian Bostridge) / with original drawings for this piece

Classical sometimes really rocks !
very sad story though : a father caring is sick child through the forest to reach the village. The kids says all the way that he is seeing "the king of shadow". the father tries to comfort him... when they finaly reach the village, in the arm of the father the kid is dead.

My mother has many golden robes."

What the Elf king quietly promises me?"
"Be calm, stay calm, my child;
It is the wind rustling in the dry leaves."

My daughters should already be waiting for you;
My daughters lead the nightly folkdance

The Elf king daughters in the gloomy place?"

It is the old grey willows gleaming."

It horrifies the father; he rides swiftly,
Holding in his arms the moaning child.
He reaches the yard with great difficulty;
In his arms, the child was dead.

you are completely right. It was interesting to notice it : i tend just to call classical music everything regardless the specific genre. for example impressionist (like debussy) romantic (schubert)... thanks anyway !

This is music from the Romantic era, not the classical era. It is "Erlkonig" by Franz Schubert. It is a "through-composed" German lied. "Through-composed form" meaning the music corresponds with the lyrics and never repeats and is ever changing and does not follow an "AB" pattern. It is a German lied (singular for lieder, literally meaning 'song'). After Beethoven, I have to say I am LOVING Schubert's lieder. Thanks for the upload! YOU ROCK! :-D

i was specifically looking for erlkonig tonight. this was the first version i listened to. i thorougly enjoyed this version.

Goethes Gedicht hat mir schon immer Angst gemacht. Ian Bostridge macht diese Angst wieder sehr fühlbar. Bei 3.08 läuft es einem kalt den Rücken runter. Meine Lieblingsfassung!
