@TravisKelleyProd Correct. If you remove the smallest drive and put in a larger one, you'll gain more space. But in his example where all your drives are the same size, your space wouldn't increase by putting in one larger drive; it would go towards expansion. I bought a drobo myself just a few weeks ago. I really like it.
Actually, one thing he said was incorrect. He says that if you had 4 500GB drives in the bays, you could pull one out and put in a 750GB drive to increase capacity. But in that case it wouldn't increase your capacity. It only would reserve the extra space to expansion. You'd need to put in two larger drives to increase storage. That's why it's advisable to have your largest drive in pairs, so no space is "wasted" to expansion.
@crocop4life i dont know if your ? about the 3tb working with the drobos but i have the same ?. Did you ever get the ans your ? or buy one and try it yourself?
I have a Stora at the moment and love it! This just looks like a big brother although without the networking built in. I think that's a smart move though, to reduce cost for people who don't want to network their Drobo.
@Koldness99 You actually sound like somebody who doesn't need backup at all. Funny you were even researching the Drobo.

When you take out a smaller drive and put in a larger one the storage space will get larger. I know I have one.
That is an old one and the newer ones have that ability.
