1986 Rally Of Portugal Accident

By the start of the 1986 Group B season,the cars and drivers were on the limit.

The Rally of Portugal has an important aspect which once made it so famous or maybe infamous: crowd control. During the 1970s and especially the 1980s, Portugal was known for spectators standing on the roadway even as the cars drove by, often resulting in near-collisions. Finally in 1986 a Ford RS200 plunged into the crowd for along time this an been an accident waiting to happen.

To keep It Short : Yes the B-groupcars were to fast, but the Portogees were NUTS .

I remember this accident clearly too. Portogees crowds were not to be controlled.

The rallydrivers complained meany times over this.

A Famous qoute was: I think of them if they were trees , because if I thought about them as people , I wouldn't be able to drive.

It's pointless to relitigate it, but if he did lose control trying to avoid people on the road, he wasn't cut out for group b anyways. plenty of drivers faced people in the roads. to be competitive, hell to drive at all with a clear conscious, you must go 10/10th unaware of the danger to them. cold, cruel, but that was group B and the fate of lives isn't up to the drivers, it was the fans who toyed with their lives, everyone knew it. everyone knows it.

I saw something similar at a street race. I think if your in the presence of super fast cars doing their thing you should stay well clear in a safe zone. @5:40 Fair play to Tony Pond he did the right thing.

@O8SERVER not dumb, there was no boundaries, back then they used to just move out of the way of the rally cars and I agree the spectators shouldn't of been there, but they didn't know it was going to crash out.
