  • What makes this underground? And if this is underground, what is aboveground? I don't understand he difference between the so-called lowbrow art scene and anything else in galleries.

  • That's a good question. I don't think there is anything that makes audrey kawasaki underground especially at this point in her career. but her work and the rest of the "genre's" work is kind of a throwback to the symbolism and abstract thoughts in surrealism mixed with more accessible imagery(generally speaking). so idk its not underground just different don't worry too much about the title of the genre it affects the art itself very little. I wonder if anyone has some insight into this?

  • I LOVE AUDREY!!! her world is so sensually pleasing! she should make a movie!

  • @Rezurekted08 sure, as an art student i can tell you... essentially lowbrow is a reaction to highbrow art . Lowbrow is commonly associated with ignorance, pranksterism, satire, abjection, anti intellectualism, intuition, failure, and of course mass cultural appeal. The question is: does lowbrow art offer any critical traction? take Audrey Kawasaki's work, she draws pretty girls with butterflies and flowers; nice drawings, but shes not saying much and isn't challenging the viewer.

  • @mongobobo I think today's 'lowbrow' AKA pop surrealism is more accepted than in the past, that's why it's hard to distinguish it from other artwork...it has become the norm today, while in the past 'lowbrow' was a counter term for the 'high brow' or more conventional artwork that was more popular among galleries and collectors, from my understanding.

  • @mongobobo Because it appeals to a different crowd. Rich people never buy this kinda shit. They buy vases and paintings of apples and crap like that. This type of Art I've seen in galleries but more of the independent ones.

  • I'm not an art world person, even though I am an artist, mainly because of my antisocial tendencies. That being said, to me, underground art is art done by folks that aren't doing it to get paid. People that do art for the love of doing it, never realizing that others may take such an interest in it. Graffiti writers come to mind, I don't think it gets any more underground than that personally.

  • its been a while since i saw something so beautiful like these. :)
