Bill Mazeroski won the 1960 World Series game against the New York Yankees and was on hand to throw out the first pitch when the Yanks came to Pittsburgh 48 years later.
@Boelcke1916 I was 10 years old and recall listening to that game on radio in Newfoundland. I was a Brave fan at the time, but did cheer for the Yankees. In 1969 I became a die hard Expo fan but cheered for the Blue Jays during their world series years/ Now I cheer for any team that has Canadian ball players. I like Votto, Morneau, etc. Cheers- Baseball is still a great game despite all its shortcomings.
you guys can celebrate all you want with the 27 others...but because of the Bucs you dont have 28. and you can cite other series all day...but the fact is all it takes is, that one time, all it took was one never-say-die team to knock you on your ass. and btw wasnt a great second baseman...he was the best defensive second basemen ever and the most clutch-hitting 2 bagger ever as well. its a shame the ny-centered/enamored writers took that long to induct him. well be back..we ah fam-ily...
@Boelcke1916 ok, i thought maris was a stand up guy, if few yankees were...but even he bitched after the series. whoever wins is the better team. i love it. in a series where they were terribly outscored, and had to avenge the series of 27, in the bottom of the ninth of game seven, a kid who entered the league at 17 with one swing of the bat lifts the "lowly" Pirates over the "almighty" yanks. true justice.
Maz was a great defensive second baseman, a gritty hitter with some power and he played with heart. I'm a Yankee fan, but I have the highest respect for Maz and the 1960 World Series ... which is my favorite Fall Classic of all-time. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. The Pirates fairly earned their victory, but they were not truly the better team. A friend of mine hates the Yankees and he figures God may have helped blow that ball over the LF wall.
@fallon7284 so what he got into the hall of fame because he was by far the best second baseman ever.ozzie smith wasnt a good hitter either and he got in for his defense.you dont have to be a power hitter or average hitter to get in.defense is just as important
hey, Maz could be more of a legend in da Burgh than Franco Harris, Jack Lambert, Mean Joe Green, or Troy Polamalu.....or 'Super Mario'

The "organization" that now calls itself the Pittsburgh Pirates should be ashamed. It is the most pathetic endeavor in major league history.
Sell the team to someone who cares about baseball and cares about Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
