its the driver not the car necessarily;rarely. teams who have the best driver win not car, all cars have their good points. like a manta killing awd on tarmac and a awd beating a manta in mud. when i grow up i want to be a rally car, a white one with red mudflaps.

actually Saab 99's came with adjustable rally suspension straight from the factory. A nice benefit for road car drivers. Saab tried to drive standard cars in rallys. The Saabs were aways a lot less modified than other cars from the same era. I think aprox~270hp / 290hp might have had something to do with broken parts and lots of burst tyres on that latest car saab rally car.

saab 99s were too heavy and lacked rally design in shape / weight /rwd or 4wd against others such as ford mk2 rs .
