Training zoo animals is an integral part of their husbandry and makes it easier for animal care staff to manage them. Training can be mentally stimulating for the animal AND the trainer!
I've been to Potter Park and saw Ebony many times. Was very cool to see the training that took place behind the scenes. Just wondered if she and Spike (the male black rhino they brought in last summer) ever did get together? I was at the zoo and saw the first time the two met. The two locked horns and snorted the other one down, and then seemed like they did not want anything to do with each other.
It's quiet remarkable how man is able to master almost any beast on this planet. Goes to show you what being sentient does.

...both she and her mate Spike died within a month apart from each other.

Sadly, Ebony died young earlier this year, due to a virus. She was only 15 years old.
