Coaches often insist that their gymnasts train the Press to Handstand as part of a workout, or as part of a routine. This skill is among the most important key elements in the sport, and an effective training element, as well.

This skill is often used as a conditioning exercise, as well as in routines on Balance Beam and even Floor Exercise. What makes it important to the development of a gymnast is its combination of strength, balance, flexibility, and body positioning. There are several ways to perform a Press Handstand, sometimes beginning from a simple stand with legs straddled, sometimes from a Straddle “L” position, and sometimes in any number of other starting positions. The legs are then lifted upward, usually through a straddled position, until the body is balanced on the hands, slowly and consistently moving toward a handstand.

  • So, how long do you think it would take me to get it? I can do cartwheels, handstands, cant do splits but nearly there, can bend over into bridge, not that flexible but i get by.

    How long approximately?

    Thanks =P -x

  • @XxbubblegumxX1 it could taste as long as a day or two, a month ir to, or a year or two. it all depends on the person

  • whenever i start going up my feet touch the ground?? help! how do i make them not touch

    thanks

  • @dancelife450 my problem is that I just can't get my legs up to a hand stand

  • @MrTubeeer99 Press. You require alot more strength with a press handstand. From a standing position, you're effectively only performing the 2nd part of the press handstand.

  • @minkyrules That's my problem. I can never roll my hips forward enough lol hence I can't straddle up into the handstand :(.

  • Didn't like it as I'd say it *describes* how to do this rather than *teaches* what to do. It tells you that you push up - OK, so if you can't then what do you do to fill the gap between now when you can't and the day you can? Reps is not the answer if you cannot do it at all! No reference to finding best balance points, where your hips should be in relation to hands, shoulders, just do this, then you do this.

  • dnt mean to be mean but its not the best one becuz we dnt even se u tchun us

    soo :/

  • it helps but i can already do it?

  • I have been working on this for about 1 year and a half now and i cant get my hips up high enough to press up to handstand, do you have any tips on how to get up? I have really long legs but I have longish arms too. Would long legs stop you from getting up to handstand or will it just be harder ? P.S i can come down from the handstand to the straddle position and hold it without my feet touching the ground. thanks

  • it hurts i dont get how u g up o a handstand next time put a vid but it helped me a little

  • I just don't understand all the people who dislike this video, that seems to be helpful for gymnasts learning the press handstand. I'm not a gymnast but I like it. I'm jealous, would like to do it on my own. :)
