Nadeem Esmail, Fraser Institute director of health system performance, discusses how Canada can improve Medicare by following the example of many European nations and encourage greater private sector participation in the health care system.
A clarification is important here. When Mr. Esmail is talking about the private sector's involvement in Europe, he is talking about non-profit involvement, unlike in the US, where is it almost all for-profit. Sweden boasts how much MORE care it delivers, while US insurance companies and HMOs boast how much LESS they provided for. Canadians should know that they have more options than the broken system they have now and no system at all.
Mr Esmail makes some interesting points. Amazing that some European countries have found ways to deliver universal health care regardless of ability to pay, without wait times, and at lower cost than what Canadians pay for their below par system. Certainly worth investigating those systems.
