The original Tudor-style St. Therese of Lisieux church was built in 1935. Exposure to the constant wind and salt air -- the church is just a short distance from the Atlantic -- weakened the structure. The original building closed in 1995.

On Saturday,March 31, about 600 people flocked to dedicate the new church in a service presided over by Bishop William Murphy. The sanctuary seats more than 500 people, about twice the size of the original, and every pew was filled. Dozens more stood along the walls.

High on the wall behind the altar, in a circle of stained glass, was an original image of St. Therese, the patron saint of vocations, an appropriate saint for what for generations has been a blue-collar, working-class community.

After the front door was opened by the Rev. Msgr. Peter Libasci, pastor of St. Therese, the bishop led the way inside.

During the Mass, he dedicated each aspect of the building. After the holy water was blessed, he walked each aisle, sprinkling the water on the walls and over the congregants.

Later, he poured chrism -- the sweet-scented oil used in baptisms and other church ceremonies -- over the altar, and spent several minutes rubbing it onto the green onyx.
