SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ships Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

@Baseshocks SGU fans love the show I think primarily, because it takes the classic tropes of science fiction, but incorporates them into a modern, adult sci-fi character drama, rather than using them as cheap clichéd plot devices the way most sci-fi shows do these days. From our perspective, shows like Atlantis look like children's shows by comparison, and that's before we get onto the superior writing, acting and production quality...

the characters i thought were very well written especially eli, but the story seemed really slow, the way they tried to use the people on the ship as the enemy, you can't complain with them doing that, the show would have gotten too repetitive with only the current fanbase watching, too bad no season

I actually enjoyed every minute of SGU and really wanted to know what happened to Destiny's crew after the 3 years and if they all survived!

While I found myself turned off by SG-U on occasion due to its unrelentingly gloomy mood and rather slow story development, I've got to admit the acting and visuals were completely top notch. While it jettisoned the humour and warmth of SG-1 and SG-A, it also dumped the cliches and cheese. I'd definitely rate SG-U higher than Atlantis. I think SG-U was continuing to improve, but just like Star Trek: Enterprise, they cancelled this show when it was starting to hit its stride.

@xbimpyx what do you mean? the reason why they speak English is because creating a new language for every planet you visit for a tv series in too expensive. I saw a doc on SG1, they loosely threw around but did not put in the show, the people on the planets speak a form of Goa'uld basic because most planets are slaves under them. The way the work the camera, the isolation, the need for food and supplies on a old broken down ship, conflict between the military and civis... BSG.
