Description on demand: In atherosclerosis so called plaques form on the walls of the blood vessels. These are deposits consisting of fat and cellular debris that increasingly narrow the vessel over time. If these plaques tear, a thrombus develops at the site of the disruption, which might detach and lead to a thrombosis. If the blocked vessel is a coronary artery, the area that is no longer supplied with blood, is cut off from oxygen- and energy supply -- a heart attack occurs.

English: Heart attacks occur most often as a result of a condition called coronary artery disease. In coronary artery disease, a fatty material called plaque builds up over many years on the inside walls of the coronary arteries.Eventually, an area of plaque can rupture, causing a blood clot to form on the surface of the plaque. If the clot becomes large enough, it can mostly or completely block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the part of the heart muscle fed by the artery.
